FSoS associate professor wins UMN Alumni award for teaching

Lindsey Weiler, associate professor in Family Social Science in the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD), is the recipient of a 2025- 26 Horace T. Morse - University of Minnesota Alumni Association Award for Outstanding Contributions to Undergraduate Education.   

In making the award, the association said, "Lindsey Weiler is a highly regarded educator and researcher whose work has shaped undergraduate education in Family Social Science. Dr. Weiler employs a whole student approach that empowers, respects, and inspires learners. Through the integration of her skills as a clinician and educator, her leadership is creating measurable and lasting impacts on students through exemplary instruction, innovative program development, and high-impact mentorship."  

Dr. Weiler joined the University of Minnesota faculty in 2014. As a trained family  therapist and prevention scientist, she applies her systemic thinking and clinical expertise to the development and testing of trauma-informed, mental health interventions. Her program of research is deeply intertwined with undergraduate education. In her lab, students gain high quality practical experience in research, social change, and community advocacy. Drawing on her own experience as a first-generation college student, Dr. Weiler is deeply committed to providing mentorship that extends  beyond the classroom.   

A former student noted: ”I am profoundly grateful for Dr. Weiler’s enduring mentorship and support. She has shaped my understanding of what it means to teach, mentor, and lead with integrity and care.”  

Weiler was also the 2024 winner of the Marty and Jack Rossmann Faculty Development Award and in 2018 was honored with the CEHD Women's Philanthropic Leader Circle's Rising Star Award. In addition, in 2023, Colorado State University's College of Health and Human Sciences named her an "Outstanding Alumni".   

She received her bachelor’s in Psychology from Concordia University, and both her master's (Human Development and Family Studies) and doctorate (Applied  Developmental Science) from Colorado State University. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship with the Developmental Psychobiology Research Group at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.

Each year since 1965, the University of Minnesota Alumni Association has recognized a select group of teachers for their outstanding contributions to undergraduate education. This honor is awarded to exceptional candidates who have been nominated by colleges for excellence in undergraduate education.
