FSoS doctoral student honored

Yiting Li is a third year doctoral candidate in Family Social Science.

A paper authored by Yiting Li, Ph.D. candidate in Family Social Science, has won the 2019 Association for Financial Counseling & Planning Education® (AFCPE®) Outstanding Symposium Student Paper Award.

Her proposal, “A Decade Review of Publications in Family Financial Socialization, Young Couples, & Financial Behaviors: 2007 – 2017,” was chosen by the AFCPE Symposium Task Force and Reviewers as 2019 Student Paper Award Winner. She will be honored at the 2019 Awards Dinner and Ceremony during the AFCPE Symposium in November in Portland, OR.

Li earned her master’s degree in Family Social Science in 2017 and is a third year doctoral candidate. Her research seeks to understand how parents’ financial values effect their children’s beliefs and influences their intimate relationships. She currently is a teaching assistant in Associate Professor Tai Mendenhall’s Intimate Relationships course and a research assistant on Associate Professor Virginia Solis Zuiker’s project, Driven to Discover State Fair Data Analysis – Minnesota Financial Capability survey.

Yiting Li’s research was highlighted by the Office of the Vice President for Research’s Inquiry blog in May.

Li’s master’s thesis, “Asian College Students: How do Families Influence Young Adults’ Financial Socialization?” was among the first studies to examine “how families influence Asian students’ financial attitudes, knowledge, and behaviors.”
