Hogan was Family Social Science department head twice, from 1984-1989, and again, 1995-2001. and served as interim dean and associate dean of the College of Human Ecology. She retired in 2006. Her research agenda was family economics and resource management, with special attention to global perspectives on families, families with limited resources, and gender equity. Her publications and presentations have made a direct impact on the welfare of individuals and families and have set policy directions affecting many.

She led the Family Social Science department’s ground-breaking faculty exchange with the U.S.S.R. in 1989-1990. She also consulted on a variety of social service and family issues for the Russian Parliament, United Nations, and universities in Thailand and Taiwan.

Hogan has been honored with the U of M President’s Distinguished Service Award, the College of Human Ecology Friend of the College Award, the Outstanding Faculty Award from the Alumni Association, and the Outstanding Alumni Award from Michigan State University, among others. She received her bachelor’s degree from Colorado State University, and both her master’s and doctoral degrees from Michigan State University.
