FSoS Assistant Professor to share insights at Research Colloquium
The Family Social Science Research Colloquium on February 3 will feature Dr. Michael Curtis, assistant professor.
Dr. Curtis will be presenting the preliminary results of his FSoS Small Grant Funds project, "Horizons of Possibility and Empowerment Among Sexual and Gender Minorities (HOPE-SGM)". HOPE-SGM is an exploratory qualitative study examining how sexual and gender minority young adults (ages 18–25) conceptualize their futures amid non-normative life trajectories. Drawing on Queer Time Theory and ecological perspectives, the study integrates in-depth interviews with an innovative life-lining method to explore future orientation across key domains, including relationships, career, health, and identity. Preliminary findings highlight how experiences of acceptance, rejection, and structural constraint shape young adults’ visions of possibility, resilience, and anticipated challenges. This colloquium will present early thematic insights and discuss implications for theory, mental health research, and interventions supporting sexual and gender minority young adults during the transition to adulthood.
Dr. Curtis earned his bachelor's degree (Psychology) and master's degree (Marriage and Family Therapy) from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and his doctoral degree in Human Development and Family Studies from the University of Georgia. He is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT).
