FSOS graduate students complete degrees with faculty appointments already in hand
Doctoral candidates completing their degrees in Family Social Science will join the faculties of the University of Rochester, NY, and Ohio University this fall.

Sloan Okrey Anderson, who will be defending their dissertation this spring, has accepted a tenure-track Assistant Professor position at the University of Rochester, New York. Okrey Anderson will be a member of the faculty in The Warner School of Education and Human Development, Department of Counseling and Human Development, which offers Masters’ and Ph.D. programs in Human Development, School Counselling and Mental Health Counseling.
Their program of research is focused on LGBTQ identity, family systems, and religiosity, and they will be developing and teaching graduate-level coursework in Adolescent Development and LGBTQ Issues.
“Sloan’s work on family relationships for LGBTQ people in highly religious families is already leading the field in this area,” says Jenifer McGuire, professor and extension specialist and Okrey Anderson’s advisor. “They have begun to disentangle complex processes related to coming out, church community visibility and parent’s theological flexibility that will likely define research in this area for years to come. It’s been an honor and a pleasure to accompany Sloan on this journey as their advisor.”

Seonghee Hong has accepted a position at Ohio University (Athens, OH) beginning in the fall of 2022. She will be an Assistant Professor of Instruction, Child and Family Studies in the Department of Social and Public Health in the College of Health Sciences and Professions. The Department offers Master’s degrees in Child and Family Studies, Health Administration, and Public Health.
Hong is completing her dissertation for defense this spring. In addition to being a researcher passionate to understand motivational factors that influence parenting, she is a celebrated teacher of our undergraduate learners.
“It is heartening for me to see the woman who joined FSOS as curious researcher and parenting educator continue to share her gifts with the next generation,” says Susan Walker, associate professor and Hong’s advisor.
